Unveiled at Samsung Unpacked 2024 on July 10, the Samsung Galaxy Ring marks the company’s first foray into smart rings. It’s poised to challenge the industry-leading Oura Ring, known for its comprehensive fitness tracking capabilities. While the Oura Ring is compatible with both Android and iPhone, the Galaxy Ring requires a Samsung mobile phone, potentially influencing its market competitiveness.

Discover all you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy Ring, from its features to its pricing and availability.

Major features of the Samsung Galaxy Ring

  1. Design and colours: The finger-based wearable weighs around three grams and comes in eight sizes, or ring sizes five to twelve. The device features three colours — black, gold, and silver.
  2. Battery: The Samsung Galaxy Ring has battery sizes of 17 mAh, 18.5 mAh and 22 mAh. One of the main features of a smart ring and a major factor in people’s decision to pick one over a watch that requires frequent charging is its battery life. Comparatively, the current battery life of the Oura Ring is around five days, and Samsung will need to match or surpass this duration. The company said that the Samsung Galaxy Ring could last up to nine days, which will comfortably outperform the Oura Ring.
  3. Wellness features: Heart health monitoring, sleep tracking, “Vitality” score, skin temperature monitoring, and period predictions are all actions the ring can perform. The Samsung Galaxy Ring has an optical heart rate sensor, blood oxygen monitor, skin temperature sensor, and an accelerometer. These track your activity and metrics throughout the day, and the data syncs via Bluetooth to the Samsung Health app. Regarding sleep, the Samsung Health app analyzes your data from the previous night and provides AI-powered insights and suggestions for better sleep.

Those who want a wearable with a health emphasis but don’t want anything as big as a watch could find the Samsung Galaxy Ring useful.

In doing so, the smart device may carve out a market niche for itself apart from smartwatches, where it would have to contend with rivals like Garmin and the Apple Watch.

Similar to what Apple and Fitbit/Google have done, the Samsung Ring may potentially serve as a springboard for the company to extend its online health and fitness products into both free and paid levels.

How much is the Samsung Galaxy Ring?

The new smart ring from Samsung is priced at $399. Preorders for the device started on July 10 when it was unveiled, and the device is expected to be available to those who preordered by late July.

For those who like to compare the prices of similar devices, the Oura Ring, the likely rival to the Galaxy Ring, is priced at $299. The Circular Pro 1 costs $410, and with $349 you can purchase the Ultrahuman Ring AIR.

Would the buzz around smart watches transcend to smart rings? This is likely to be the case. Quite a lot of people like to wear rings, and they might just be investing in the Samsung Galaxy Ring.
