YAAC celebrates International Youth Day with a call for digital empowerment

The Youth Alliance and Action for Change (YAAC), has marked International Youth Day with a call for the digital empowerment of young people, underscoring the role of young people in leveraging digital technology to forge a sustainable and inclusive future.

In a press release on Monday, August 12, 2024, marking International Youth Day, the Youth Alliance and Action for Change, called on global leaders to recognize the power of the youth in driving digital innovation. “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” was the theme for the observation of the day by Youth Alliance for Action and Change.

“The youth stands at the forefront of this digital revolution, using technology to drive progress, create opportunities, and build a more inclusive and sustainable world,” part of the statement signed by the convener of YAAC, Dr Eunice Yorgri, read.

The statement emphasized the need for the youth to be supported with the tools and resources they need to translate their digital skills into actions that will contribute to a better future.

“We believe in the potential of the youth in leading a future that is not only technologically advanced but also socially and environmentally responsible. On this day of commemoration, we salute the youth who are striving to have a better future,” the statement added.

YAAC acknowledged and bemoaned the numerous challenges facing the youth today, which continue to hinder their progress and inhibit their abilities and potential.

“The youth of present day face a lot of challenges including unemployment, drug addiction, different forms of oppression, deprivation of all forms, due to wars, conflicts, climate change, unfavourable policies and economic conditions,” the statement acknowledged. These challenges the organization believes must be tackled to ensure the youth can thrive and realize their full potential.

“We call for international peace and better conditions for all, especially the youth, who are, and will continue to be the future leaders,” the statement added.

Every year on August 12, has been designated by the United Nations to recognize the potential, achievements and contributions of young people across the globe as essential partners for building a better world. The International Youth Day has been observed worldwide since 2000.
