Data from the National Communications Authority (NCA) shows that MTN Ghana leads the way in subscriber acquisitions as the telecommunications giant has more than 29 million registered SIM cards in the country.
The National Communications Authority completed the mass SIM Registration Exercise in May 2023 with the primary objective of the national initiative being to establish a SIM database with integrity.
According to the Authority, as of 14th June 2024, the total number of active registered SIM cards (defined by the International Telecommunications Union as SIMs that are active within a 90-day period) in Ghana, was 39,941,127.
The data indicates just how dominant MTN Ghana has been in the Ghanaian market. With its number of registered SIM cards reported to be 29,866,079, MTN Ghana controls 75% of the market, with Telecel Ghana following with 6,161,598 registered SIM cards, representing 15%. AT and Telesol follow with 3,912,298 (10%) and 1,152 (0%) respectively.
Meanwhile, the NCA admonishes consumers and the general public to check the number of SIM(s) linked to their Ghana Card by dialling *402# on their phones and following the prompts. Where a subscriber is no longer using a SIM(s), he/she is entreated to visit the Customer Care Centre(s) of the Network Operator to delink the number(s).
