AI has a bigger impact on the future of journalism, and this is not a false statement. Industry players have thus recognized this fact and are calling for investment in AI infrastructure in the country. This was the unanimous position held by experts and other speakers at the AI infrastructureand conference of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) held in Accra last Thursday evening.
Those who made the call for investment in AI infrastructure at the event included the Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Edel Technology Consulting, Ethel Cofie; General Manager, External of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku; the Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar; the President of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR), Esther Cobbah, and the President of the GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour.
The speakers emphasized that, given AI’s potential to change the future of journalism in the nation, the field had a bright future. However, it was up to media organizations and journalists to make use of this potential in a way that would improve their art. Thus, they issued caution, saying that while embracing AI, journalists still needed to uphold accountable journalism by using moral principles.
The commemorative lecture was on the theme: “75 Years of Excellence in Journalism: Honouring the Past, embracing the Present and Shaping the Future,” with the sub-theme “AI and the Future of Journalism.”
The finest in the media business, including previous GJA presidents, legislators, media managers, and other stakeholders, came together for the GJA 75th anniversary lecture.
