MTN Issues scam alert for widely circulated Old SIM Card reward

MTN Ghana has issued a scam alert for a widely circulated old SIM Card reward system where unsuspecting customers are made to believe that the network is offering free internet as a reward for their loyalty.

Telecommunication network fraud has been on the increase, and MTN Ghana has been one of the networks whose platform fraudsters use to orchestrate their fraudulent activities. The company is constantly making efforts to clamp down on cybercrime, but fraudsters constantly develop new tactics in a bid to keep their activities going.

In the latest strategy these scammers have developed – which has been running for a while, leading to MTN issuing a scam alert – unsuspecting customers receive messages supposedly from MTN asking them to confirm how long they have been using their MTN mobile numbers, which will then determine whether they qualify for a non-existent MTN old SIM card reward.

They claim MTN is offering them specific gigabytes of free internet usage for their loyalty to the network for periods ranging from 6 months to five years and more.

Given how expensive internet data has become in the country, there is a high chance that many people would fall for this supposed old SIM Card reward, thereby falling victim to the fraudsters. MTN is therefore issuing the scam alert to people for them to be vigilant and not fall victim, as the network is not running any such reward system at the moment.
