By the end of August 2024, Starlink will commence its Ghana satellite internet services operations, according to Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) in a press release on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
According to the NCA, all due diligence has been completed and Starlink will operate in the country under the name Space X Starlink GH LTD. This is good news for internet users in the country as Starlink is set to provide some competition to local internet service providers.
The problem with the local internet service providers has not only been the exorbitant data packages but the slow pace of internet connectivity. With Starlink, although the charges may be high, consumers can be assured of much faster connectivity.
Since Starlink’s launch last year, Ghana will be the 12th nation in Africa to formally run the service. Although Starlink has been active in Ghana for some time, it had previously operated without regulatory approval.
In April of this year, the NCA gave Space X’s Starlink regulatory authority to offer satellite internet services in the country. The clearance came about as a result of the Satellite Licensing Framework, a new regulation that the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization created to open the door for Starlink to enter the Ghanaian market.
